Fog may be one of the most magical things to happen in a shoot - it creates even light and can seem to make everything glow. It also lends an other worldly feel as the textures of the landscape seemingly materialize out of the landscape.
Fog is so quintessential coastal Acadia, mostly because Maine is in one of only three high incidence regions for fog in the US thanks to the warmer air moving in over colder water. In 2023 we had fog or overcast for almost 6 weeks straight!
While big showy sunrises and sunsets certainly are eye catching, there is something that is just so MAINE about fog that it makes our hearts sing when we’re able to capture it for our clients.
On the lakes, it adds soft texture to the mountains and the background, and when it’s really thick it can make the water seem endless.
The softening of the background helps to bring out and accentuate the details, textures, and colors of the foreground that can sometimes be lost in shadows and highlights.
In the woods, fog makes the leaves and mosses even more saturated, and the trails take on an enchanted feeling.
Sometimes the fog lifts unexpectedly giving the feel of two sessions in one, like it did for this awesome family! The photo on the left was before the fog lifted when we sought out the closer details and spots of color. The photo on the right was at the end of the session when the fog lifted to reveal the mountains in the distance. Acadia is full of surprises :)
Thinking of a Maine photo session but not sure about the weather? We live on Mount Desert Island all year and are out in the park in all kinds of weather. We’d be happy to discuss which locations and timing would work best for you, and if the weather takes unexpected turns, we’ll be ready to shift to give you beautiful photos come rain or Maine fog :)
